WHO WE ARE

Common Time Pictures intends to bridge the divide between the golden age of Hollywood and today. We seek to adapt, develop, and produce stories from classic literature and film, as well as create original tales that transport the viewer into the magical world of motion pictures.

David Ruben - Executive

David Ruben received his BFA in Music Theatre from Illinois Wesleyan University. He has produced, directed, or appeared in over fifty stage productions spanning across Illinois, California, Georgia, and Oregon. He co-founded the Music Theatre Society (now in its 11th year) at Wesleyan, which is dedicated to presenting lost stage shows in a concert setting.

He served as president of his own 501(c)(3) theatre company in Portland, Oregon. That company garnered many awards during his tenure, including a personal award for Best Choreography from the Portland Area Musical Theatre Awards for his production of Leonard Bernstein’s “Wonderful Town.” He also served on the board of Blue Monkey Theatre Co. for three years. David composed the musical score to a performance of the classic book, “The Stinky Cheese Man,” that had a successful run at the Northwest Children’s Theatre.
He has been teaching piano, voice, and acting at the Hollywood Academy of Music and Arts for three years, and apprenticed in film producing with his business partner, Kathy Rich-McFarland, under the tutelage of the late, great Rowland Perkins (founding partner of CAA). As co-founder of Common Time Pictures, the company has over ten titles in development, including a screwball comedy and a swashbuckling adventure classic. David penned and directed the Common Time Pictures’ short, “Wholly Guacamole,” a black-and-white homage to the 1930’s whodunnits.

Kathy Rich-McFarland - Executive

Kathy Rich-McFarland, always passionate about film and acting, began studying acting several years back, and has worked with international master teachers on the Chekhov acting technique from Los Angeles to Finland. She holds a certificate in public television, apprenticed under the tutelage of the late, great Rowland Perkins (founding partner of CAA), and has worked as a production and development assistant on various shorts and features.

In 2017, Kathy served as a panelist on the Utah Women and Film panel, “Key Issues Facing Women in Film Today,” held during the Sundance Film Festival. As a co-founder of Common Time Pictures with David, they have numerous films in development, ranging in all genres and price points. She appeared in Common Time Pictures’ premier project, “Wholly Guacamole”, as the bitingly funny, leading lady.

Kathy earned both her doctorate in health science / preventive care and a master’s degree in public health nutrition from world-renowned Loma Linda University. In addition, she is a Registered Nurse with a Master of Nursing degree from the University of Kansas. Dr. McFarland has worked in a variety of healthcare settings, and is published in both peer-review journals and lay magazines.
